BEFORE: Exterior started out with awkward roofline, inadequate overhangs, and ordinary siding.

AFTER: Live edge cedar siding, cedar decking, standing seam metal roof, stonework, landscaping.

AFTER: standing seam metal roof will withstand hard Vermont winters.

Live-edge siding for that rustic, Vermont ski cabin feel.

BEFORE: decking, siding, roofing, and landscaping to be replaced.

DURING: siding and roofing replaced in time for winter; decking and landscaping phase continued in the summer months.

AFTER: heated stonework, cedar decking and railings, raised planting beds, and the start of hot tub out building (to be completed in the next phase).

BEFORE: after the interior was updated, some of the siding had been removed for window replacements. An opportunity was born.

AFTER: live edge cedar siding with standing seam metal roof.

AFTER: room for seasonal enjoyment of the landscape, with materials that will weather any storm.

BEFORE: the exterior needed a little style direction.

AFTER: the porches, off the guest bedrooms, now have a proper roof to protect visitors from the elements.

BEFORE: the pitch of the roof was irregular, and the overhang had no real purpose.

AFTER: major impact achieved through hefty beams and trusses.

BEFORE: the lower level was suffering from some less than ideal snow-weather materials.

AFTER: stonework beneath the ‘snow line’ will help keep the house protected, and looks handsome at the same time.

Stone window ledges protect against inevitable elements.

AFTER: a direction change in the staircase allows for a more gracious entrance to the home. Stonework further protects property from precipitation.

Beautiful cedar beneath the overhang frames out a lovely view.

Interior, the ceilings began as simple sheetrock. Clear coated pine with hefty beams emphasizes the vaulted ceiling and cabin feel.

Interior features include custom furniture, doors and moldings, flooring, paint, masonry, and cabinetry.

Custom fine furniture was created and built for this rustic master suite.

Everything, from the ceiling and beams, to the furnishings, were custom created for these homeowners.

Custom fireplace hearth was built for this family room; a heated tile entrance was installed with custom pre-finished flooring for a seamless transition.

Custom furniture was built for specific areas of the home.

The garage was turned into an equipment room with custom cabinetry and a heated concrete floor.

New decking in cedar will last through the summer and winter months with grace.

With more custom touches to come, including a detatched garage and horseshoe driveway, ski season just can’t come soon enough for these homeowners.

Princeton

BEFORE, the kitchen, facing north.

AFTER, the kitchen, facing north. Custom millwork, restored original flooring, plus all new cabinets, appliances, electrical, walls, ceilings, tile, heating.

BEFORE, kitchen facing south. There was a full bathroom within the kitchen, and an awkward eat-in area just adjacent the formal dining room.

AFTER, kitchen, facing south-east. The full bath was turned into a half bath, and the kitchen was expanded. The extension area houses double-wall ovens, refrigerator, and what the homeowner calls the ‘baking nook.’

AFTER, kitchen facing south-west. New windows were installed to match the existing windows in the rest of the house, with custom matched millwork to replicate the original 1920s woodwork.

The countertops are from Ashfield, MA, and are local to the area. The peninsula provides an eat-in area perfect for quick breakfasts, or enjoying a glass of wine with the cook.

Southern, western and northern light graces this room, and now that the galley is one continuous space, the light can travel throughout the room all day long.

A bank of drawers beneath a 36″ gas cooktop gives these homeowners their ideal cooking space. And the custom backsplash tile work reflects an architectural motif found throughout the home, and the neighborhood.

Custom head-casings were built to finish off semi-custom cabinetry and give a more historic and built-in look.

The ‘baking nook’ provides ample space for baking, and cooling fresh goodies, without interrupting the flow of the cooking zone. Custom shelves provide display space, and a handy cookbook area.

This heater was salvaged from the original kitchen, and refitted for the rear of the kitchen. We enclosed it, and custom built a removable radiator cover.

The powder room boasts in-floor radiant heating, marble flooring, new window with custom-milled trim package, and new plumbing and lighting fixtures.

The master bathroom – formerly the maid’s bath – includes a custom shower, marble floors, pedestal sink and in-floor radiant heat.

Radiant floor heat, and all new everything to make this bath fit for the masters of the house (and not just the maid).

Custom built mirror frame disguises the medicine cabinet, and echoes the moulding throughout the home.

Working with the existing window and doorway, we updated all the millwork with custom replicas in poplar – the original wood used throughout the home – and painted it to match the rest of the trim package.

The family bath features a custom built vanity with open storage, basket storage, butcher-block countertops, and a removable panel which hides the existing radiator.

Custom shelves make the most of the space above the commode, and the built-in cabinet extends the counterspace from wall to wall.

BEFORE, family bath, facing west. An awkward layout, plus a decaying tub surround, required a bit of a face-lift.

AFTER, family bath, facing west. Leaving the plumbing in its original locations, we built a custom vanity, tiled the shower including custom niches for bath supplies, and installed a new cast-iron tub.

The custom carpentry gives the family bath plenty of room for each resident, and leaves space for toys, and bath time games to be hidden from view.

The curved sink encourages little ones to feel at home in this space, while the efficient cabinet even includes a space for magazines.

AFTER, foyer, facing south-west. The floors on the entire first level were refinished, including the oak staircase and balustrade. All new paint on the walls and trim brighten and refresh the original details.

Exterior porch stairs were re-built to reflect original railing details from 1920. Rich brown stain on porch and cedar stair treads extends the interior style to the exterior.

Updating this home included the side/kitchen entry, installing a custom medallion detail (matching existing one built in the 1920s), replacing the flooring with cedar decking, and custom railings and posts wrapped in cedar.

Innovative works on projects ranging from whole house builds and additions, to kitchen and bath remodels, to individual room renovations. Here is a look at some of our most dramatic makeovers and transformations.

Maple

BEFORE: the kitchen was a dated mix of finishes and fixtures that had all run their course.

AFTER: addressing the lighting, reworking the layout, and brightening the space with plenty of white updated and refreshed this space.

Powder room: BEFORE and AFTER. The sink was pivoted and the door moved to create space for an open pantry. New penny tile flooring and fixtures complete this transformation.

New plumbing fixtures, plus a more tidy and efficient layout, give a nod to the history of this 1920s home.

BEFORE: The mudroom/rear entry to the home.

AFTER: the mudroom area was retiled with a durable, and low-maintenance ceramic tile. The bathroom door was moved back to make room for an open pantry, and to provide a bit more privacy.

The open pantry correlates to the custom built open shelves, and the custom finished floors match nearly perfectly to the original oak floors in this 1920s home.

By turning the sink to face the back door, instead of the interior of the space, the island could be reimagined with seating for up to three.

By moving the refrigerator to the pantry side of the room, space is freed up on both sides of the range making for more comfortable cooking prep.

BEFORE: Worn cabinetry, loose countertops, inefficient layout, and dingy flooring plagued this space.

AFTER: A new layout atop site finished flooring creates better flow. The sideboard area beneath the open shelves was reduced to upper cabinet depth to allow for more workflow.

Classic touches in clean, white cabinetry, and retro fixtures give personality and charm to the kitchen.

Custom built open shelves allow for open display, easy access to everyday items, and visually expand the room.

Locally quarried stone from Danby, VT adds luxury and durability.

Penny tile, mixed in with classic subway tile, ties the powder room and the kitchen together. White cabinetry is made more custom with a light rail, crown moulding and end panel details.

Countertops, tile, cabinetry and appliances in bright tones lighten the space and expand the room.

Custom shelving was built on site to the exact specifications of the existing walls. Scribed around plaster imperfections, these shelves are sturdy, and built to withstand plenty of use.

A sideboard houses cutlery and other serving goods, and is capped off with custom woodwork to help create a semi-custom total look.

The rear room was once the dining room, but now houses the living space, making for an easy flow between entertaining, cooking, and relaxing.
